After the
longest January ever, heading into the windiest Febraury (hello, Storm
Ciara!) at least every Sunday we have been able to get a glamour fix - where
would we be without Dancing On Ice?
And while most of us are tucked up in front of the telly each week, some of Team Fake Bake have been working
super-hard getting everyone on camera
ready for their close-ups.
This year’s DOI has already been making the
headlines, and the costumes, sets and themes have been bigger and better than
ever. New judge John Barrowman has
added a bit of niceness, and the legend that is H from Steps has made a little bit of history with Matt Evers, who we have been
collaborating with since the show’s early days.
One thing we
know from talking to our BTS team is
how much hard work goes into a live show like DOI. As viewers, we just rock up
on a Sunday evening with carb cravings. As a TV show, the graft starts as soon
as the previous show has ended. The pro
skaters and celebrities are back on the ice making a start on next week’s
routines, and Team Fake Bake are
busy getting them to take care of their skin. Fresh, new routines call for
fresh, new Fake Bake tans.
We thought
we’d catch up with our backstage crew to get all the latest news. Our Team Fake
Bake are gamely headed up by our Global
Creative Consultant, James Harknett, and The Tan Expert, Eloise.
Over to you,
guys….
James, what do you enjoy most about
heading up Team Fake Bake for DOI?
So this year
we are back for the third year running providing
the glows for the the pro skaters and celebs! Dancing On Ice is such a loved and established show with a huge
following. This is an opportunity for our Fake
Bake tans to be showcased in glittering HD so there’s no room for any
tanning fails - not that we are into fails, obviously!
For the past three seasons I’ve been lucky enough to work with
one of the industry’s finest tanning
therapists, Eloise. Her experience in the industry is exceptional and like
myself she understands about tailoring
the tan to the individual’s skin tone. Also when you’re tanning 25 people
in a row it’s important to communicate with your client and constantly keep
them reminded of aftercare tips.
Any top tips for us dedicated winter
tanners?
This year I’m celebrating 20 years in
tanning so there’s nothing I’ve not come across in all these years. I would say our
main issue at the studio, which is purpose built in the middle of an airfield,
is that the skaters come off the ice sweaty as they train so hard. The build up of perspiration can be
troublesome on the skin, so we get through a lot of biodegradable water wipes. Also,
it’s important they try and remove the remnants of older tan from the weeks
before. I always recommend a hot soak the night before and to use a wet flannel
to help fade out older colour, especially on the tops of inner arms and skin
above the breasts towards the corner of the underarm.
This season
we have seen the demand for 60 Minutes
professional tan go up by 80% as the skaters and celebs are loving the ease and simplicity of express
tanning. Also the tone is so authentic on everyone’s skin tone and really
does mimic a real sun tan. Also less make-up is needed with an all-over glow.
With this
type of performance, costumes are elaborate and sexy and for pros and celebs
there is always plenty of skin on show which really showcases the Fake Bake pro tanning ranges and shades - it’s a
win-win for us as a brand!
Eloise, It’s such a busy time for you
- what’s the prep like?
As a team,
we have to be super-organised. We
have to use forward thinking where stock is concerned to make sure every single
pro skater and celeb gets the tan that they need. I am used to working by
myself as a pro tanner, but I really enjoy team events like this one. Trust me,
DOI is literally my social life after Christmas now. It takes up every weekend,
and I love it. The vibe backstage is relaxed
and exciting at the same time. As a pro tanner, an event like DOI tests all your skills as a tanner but
also as an all-rounder: you have to be ready with all of your fully functioning
equipment, rested and full of energy!
You provide the Fake Bake pro tans
but what products from the range are the guys using between shows?
Obviously,
we want to make sure that our tans work, so we make sure everyone uses our Fake Bake Coconut Body Polish to
prepare the skin and Fake Bake Oil Free
Mistifier to keep skin moisturised without stickiness. And finally, if any
stubborn areas need prepping before a fresh tan is applied, our Fake Bake Tan Corrector and Eraser works
wonders!
What do you love about working on the
show?
It’s a real team effort - James is great
fun, and with the rest of our team we get to create Fake Bake tans that are part of some really special looks. We love
seeing the playback each week. We have made some great friends on and off
screen, and lots of the pro skaters and celebs become regular clients, too!
Where would we be without these two
and the rest of our VIP, elite tanners?
And during
this special week, we have decided to take ultimate inspo from DOI’s legendary presenters, and make
Valentine’s Day a celebration of love in all of its forms, and also
remember this super-cute advice: put more friendship into your romance, and
more romance into your friendships.
So this
Friday forget about the word ‘status’ and do something fabulous for someone you
love - and that includes you - and if this storm has passed forget about boring
tables-for-two and include everyone who matters.
It’s time to
get tanned and get our skates on.
