FAKE BAKE talks festive tanning, LA dreaming and a golden year with James Harknett..

Our Global Creative Consultant, James Harknett, is someone we are super proud of here at Team Fake Bake. Having been a part of our tanning family for several years now, James is our go-to guy for expertise, new ideas and cutting edge feels. We caught up with James after a whistle-stop trip to America, and managed to sit down with him at this, one of the busiest times in our beauty calendars.

When it comes to class, no-one rivals our fabulous Mr. H. And when it comes to tanning, James has the wonderful quality of moving between his A-list clients, long term customers and new tanners with ease. As well as being based at the luxurious  W Hotel in London, James also works regularly with the very best glossies and blogs to collaborate not just on self tanning but also to create the types of images that always grab our attention.

So, we asked for a little time with our globetrotting supertanner to ask him for some tips, also about what he’s been up to, and finally his highlights of 2019 as we get closer to the festive season. Here’s what we talked about.

James, you’ve just got back from the States. Tell us a little more…

Most of my trip was professional, although there were tiny windows when I got to have some time off - although not much! As I am based at the W Hotel here in London, I have a great connection with the brand and so I didn’t think twice about spending some time at the W Hotel in Los Angeles. I got to spread the word about Fake Bake and meet, and tan, some up-and-coming names, which is really important. For me as a professional tanner, and Fake Bake as a brand, moving forward really matters. I also got to spend time with the wonderful Victoria Halliday, and we got to see some of the sights, as well as literally catching up in front of the iconic Hollywood sign. It was a perfect trip for me, after spending a little time in Vegas first. I love the enthusiasm that literally welcomes you whenever you step off the plane. It’s infectious! Meeting Jimmy Coco really made the trip for me - he is a legend in the industry and works with the very best.

Professionally, you’ve had such an awe inspiring year. Can you tell us about a few highlights?

I’ll try and choose a few - although it’s been such a crazy year there is so much to talk about! I was really honoured recently when David Gandy talked about my work in GQ magazine. He really is a shining and stylish light still in the industry, and great to work with.

I was honoured by GQ earlier in the year with a GQ Grooming Award for Best Wellness Experience, which was a real recognition not just for the work I do, but for the world of self tanning, too! I always mention that more and more guys are getting into self tanning now - it’s becoming a really democratic beauty treatment.

Working with Julia Styles for Season 2 of Riviera was something really special. This series has grown so much and is so luxurious and perfectly escapist television, set in the most glorious locations. Julia is sheer elegance from head-to-toe, and I was really proud to help be a part of the look that was created for her.

Closer to home, working with the rest of Team Fake Bake right at the start of the year on Dancing On Ice was just remarkable. This is prime time, live television and we had so many skaters and celebrities to work with, but we did so under the most challenging conditions in terms of time and climate. It showed me what you can create with the best tanning formulations and a first class team.

I worked with lots of brides this year, and they are always keen to look their best - that’s a given! Bridal tanning has to be so precise and natural, and there are so many things to take into account. The Brights’ wedding was brilliant fun as the whole family were involved, including the bridegroom. It was a heartwarming day.

I love working in fashion as part of my job, and as well as working with magazines and more traditional media I also love getting out there and meeting people who inspire. I adore all the Fashion Weeks and had a terrific time at Milan Fashion Week earlier in the autumn with @therealfashionblogger as she’s great company and really loves brightly defined and colourful looks.

James we know you are a huge music fan and this has been a vintage year. Can you choose a favourite?

Everyone who knows me knows how much I love my music, especially when it is live, and 2019 has not disappointed. I can’t choose a favourite as that would be impossible, but there are a few highlights that will be hard to beat next year.

I have just seen Madonna in Las Vegas, who is such a musical and cultural icon for me. I also got to see her front row in New York earlier this year as part of her Madame X Tour and she really is remarkable and so creative - she never fails to both surprise and inspire at the same time. I’m a lifelong fan, that’s for sure!

I also got to meet Janet Jackson in Las Vegas over the summer and, again, you can’t argue with history when it comes to how influential she is as both an artist and as an entertainer.

I absolutely adore Kylie Minogue and watching her at Glastonbury this year felt like a real moment to remember. She is one of the most hard-working and generous people in the music industry. The crowd went nuts and it’s no surprise it’s a performance that broke viewing records. I was just so proud! I was also front row when she performed at Edinburgh Castle - she really is flawless.

Finally, I got to see the legendary Barbara Streisand with my sister in Hyde Park. What can I say? She was as brilliant as ever. You can probably notice a theme here - I’m inspired by strong, creative and fearless women, too, and I count my sister right up there on that particular list.

Finally, James, can you use all of the inspiration to get us ready for the party season?

This season is all about full-on glamour. Of course, party season comes at the same time of year as ramping up central heating and cold weather outside, so it takes effort and consistency to get your skin prepped. It really doesn’t take too much time to keep your skin polished with Fake Bake Coconut Body Polish. It’s vital to use it often, not just before tanning applications, so that your skin gets the regular benefit of exfoliation.

If it’s a special occasion I would always say that a professional Fake Bake spray tan will make sure you are perfectly golden from top-to-toe. At such a busy time, it’s super convenient to tan at home, too. Everyone who has tried the new Fake Bake x Spectrum Go With The Glow Gift Set loves it, as you can choose a lighter finish with our Tanning Water or go dark with our Double Shot Espresso. The Fake Bake Bronzer is both subtle and buildable, and the luxury Spectrum Brush and Bag making glowing on the go so convenient. Wherever you can, take your time. Work slowly and steadily from your toes upwards, and make it an occasion for some mindful pampering. At this time of year, it’s a welcome break!

My top tip this year has really been to choose a formula and shade that really suits you, your skin type and your colouring, including your hair - try not to think too much about what others are wearing, really go for what works for you. When it comes to your beauty intuition, you know yourself better than anyone. And that really works well in all areas of your life, I hope!”

So there we have it. We came away from our interview with James with some life advice as well as his tanning tips. We do tend to spend our time scrolling, and wondering how we could be more like someone else, and a little bit less like ourselves.

Maybe the best gift we could ourselves this year is to look in the mirror, work with what we’ve got, slick on our lip gloss and go out there and create brilliant memories with people we love.

We can filter a lot in our worlds, but that joy we get from laughing with people who matter? It’s simply unwrappable…

FAKE BAKE gets pre-party red carpet ready with our own fashion expert, Roxanne Dragsnes….

It’s that time of year when we start to think about what we are going to wear on the nights when we get out of our PJ’s and step away from jungle-related viewing to actually go out. As in full-on Out Out. Not a casual evening. Not a last minute throw-something-together kinda night. It’s more of an Oscars-level affair, with all of the prep that goes with it.

We’ve been getting lots of inspo recently as red carpets have been rolling out in the UK, too, and whether it has been soap-related, or the Pride of Britain Awards, we have seen some of our fave faces knock it out of the style ball park. Remember the days when you used to see some real red carpet howlers? They simply don’t happen anymore. We are all clued up when it comes to chic. (Oh and by the way, we did manage to get some Giambattista Valli pieces last week but we do wish the member of Team Fake Bake who was late going shopping and only managed to get some socks would get over it…..)

Back to business. Who have we been loving? Well, of course, we are a little bit biased but when we have helped some gorgeous people get ready with their pro Fake Bake spray tans, when they proudly show them off, dressed to kill, then we give little rounds of applause. Whilst sat in our PJs, obvs.

Vicky Pattison swapped her Masterchef whites for something altogether more fabulous recently…

Our eternal fave Helen Flanagan braved getting her pins out, and we’d tackle the cold if we looked this gorgeously molten…

Our Strictly shining star Saffron Barker wows as much on the carpet as she does on the dancefloor….

However, when faced with seas of dresses and racks of party pieces we decided we needed some help, and who better to ask than Team Fake Bake’s own Social Media specialist Roxanne Dragsnes? Here’s what she told us...

Roxanne, what are your top tips and trends for the party season?

Everyone who knows me, knows that I am all about sparkle and sequins in the party season! Every Christmas I love seeing everyone’s glam outfits. I would say don’t be scared-go for it! Fashion is all about showing off your individual style and feeling good in what you wear. Go for that statement piece this party season, like that maxi sparkle dress you’ve had your eye on from ASOS and then keep the rest of your outfit simple. Nude or clear heels, nude bag and simple jewellery will make that statement piece pop. If I want to look glam but don’t want to wear a dress then I would always go for a sequin trouser with a blouse or t-shirt and leather jacket to style it down.

How do you put together your own looks?
I still love a magazine and will look to them for inspiration. Instagram is a huge platform I use for fashion inspo. I love following celebrities and influencers for style tips. I adore when an influencer does a styling video as this is great for tips! I visualise what an outfit would look like on me before I buy it. I did fashion styling when I was younger and I know what works on me and what to avoid! I absolutely love Trinny from This Morning as she loves sequins even more than I do, so I look to her for fashion inspiration. I am loving the X Factor Celebrity at the minute and of course Megan McKenna is style GOALS, I love how she styles an outfit to suit her and how she puts her own ideas to the outfit. The gold suit she wore recently is a gorgeous alternative to a dress - and the shoes are to-die-for! I am really enjoying her new pare-down sense of style. She has never looked better!

Who are your fave hair and beauty influencers, to complete the look?

For hair, I follow Carl Bembridge as I love the different styles he does and you never know what he will do next with hairstyles. He does a lot of celebrities and influencers which I love! Carl works with a lot of the famous names that Fake Bake work with, too! This recent look on Samantha Faiers is perfect for party season.

I adore Huda Beauty as her make-up tips look amazing and are easy to follow. I always like a simple bronzed makeup look that is easy to achieve at home. She really has changed the beauty game and I admire the way she includes her fans in her work. This is the kind of classic Huda look that I go for!

How do you get your flawless tan?

I don’t like to go a day without wearing Fake Bake! I keep my tan looking good by following Fake Bake tips which are:
1)       I use Fake Bake Tan Corrector & Eraser to remove all  of my previous tan so that my skin is clean and ready for a new tan application!
2)       I then use my fave Fake Bake DoubleShot Espresso as I like a dark tan and if you are like me you will love this one! It is currently available as part of our Fake Bake X Spectrum Go With The Glow Gift Set so I am hoping to find a few under my tree! It is such an easy tan to apply.
3)       Then I moisturise with Fake Bake Coconut Moisturiser to ensure my tan lasts as long as possible and fades evenly. Fake Bake are famous for having beautiful formulas that do just this - not a patch in sight!
4)    For special occasions I will always opt for a professional Fake Bake spray tan. Being based at our HQ I am lucky we have so many trained staff around so I can let them loose with their spray gun if it’s for an event where I am representing the brand.

So that’s us style educated, although we have to say, as we work with Rox, that her idea of dressing down and ours isn’t quite the same. However, having someone in the office who knows how to wow does make us up our style game when we need to. Now all we need to do is go shopping. Again.

We need to be prepared though and that means being fit, healthy, and ready for action. The fruit in our mince pies surely counts as part of our fave a day, doesn’t it?
Sorted.

FAKE BAKE on Giambattista Valli’s new dream fashion edit that we can all buy into…

If you dream of clean lines and silhouettes then the last designer you would think of is Giambattista Valli. The native Roman has injected youth and colour into the hallowed halls of haute couture, being one of the few non-French designers to be granted couture status in the city of Paris. Whether he is dressing fashion royalty Sarah Jessica Parker or pop princess perfection Ariana Grande, his designs are bright, and frothy and detailed and divine.

Backstage at Valli Couture in Paris

When Kendall Jenner stepped out at the Amfar Cannes Gala at this year’s film festival the look was instantly recognisable as a signature Valli piece, only this time there was a difference: the dress was not part of his couture collection, but the first glimpse of his new, groundbreaking, about-to-launch range for H&M. The High Street giant are no strangers to collaborations, having worked with Stella McCartney and Versace in the past, but this time around the buzz has been deafening.

Firstly, Giambattista and H&M put just as much into showing this collection as any couture name would: the recent catwalk extravaganza at Palazzo Doria Pamphij in Rome was simply breathtaking. The Front Row was an electic mix, waiting with anticipation to see what a master who charges tens of thousands of pounds for a made-to-measure piece would produce for one of the world’s most inexpensive fashion chains.

Valli answered in style, and then some. Of course, there were the frothy, signature gowns, but there were also a huge, extended range of pieces including embellished coats, hoodies and logo T’s, ruffled blouses and sleek trousers to add a bit of tailoring to the mix.

The collection can simply described as rich in terms of colours, finishes and impression. They are clothes to be noticed in, and while there are separate collections for women and men, Valli is keen to point out that many of the pieces are interchangeable. It’s being sold as fashion without boundaries, and it certainly feels like new territory. And Valli could never be thought of as every day, as he said recently, “I don’t dress people to go to work.”

We noticed that Valli used a really diverse range of models both in his show and his press pics for the range. We also fell in love with accessories. Often, with collaborations they tend to get a little overlooked and are not the best in terms of quality, but this time out they are just beautiful.

You can choose your own skin finish to go with the range, as it’s certainly not a one-look affair, but we did notice that some of the models had really subtle tans and gorgeous glows going on. We. Are. Sold.

So when we get our hands on our own pieces we are breaking open our Fake Bake x Spectrum Go With The Glow Gift Sets a few weeks early, because it’s a Valli-based beauty emergency. You get to choose between three of your fave Fake Bake self tans - we are going for Double Shot Espresso, because it has an Italian-in-Paris feel about it. Then we’ll be dusting on our infamous Fake Bake Bronzer with the legendary Spectrum A01 Brush. If you’re going for the GV look then you need to be all in.

There are literally just a handful of sleeps to go, and then we’ll be there, elbows at the ready and phones charged and ready for action, to see what we can pick up. And as for that Valli admission that he doesn’t dress people for work? Well, he’s never met Team Fake Bake before because we will be wearing every piece we can get our hands on to the office.

A huge, tiered, frothy pink dress is easy for KJ to wear in Cannes. But us fashion bravehearts will be wearing ours on the bus to get into work on time in style.

We’re not sure what the great Valli maestro himself might think but if you know us, then we never really like doing what we’re told, do we?
