FAKE BAKE gets a lesson in Ultimate Chic from super Stylist Jess Walsh…

As avid fashion devotees, what we see on glossy pages or on social media looks like a chic snapshot in time. But as part of Team Fake Bake, we already know the hard work that goes on BTS to make sure everything is picture perfect. But what’s it actually like to be in charge of what goes on? We caught up up with super stylist Jess Walsh to ask her what the truth is, what her styling tips are and what Spring/Summer 2019 has in store for us. Jess has worked with leading brands like Lavish Alice, River Island and Boohoo as well as stylish celebs we love from Laura Whitmore to Vanessa White. Oh, and did we mention she’s a natural in front of the camera and a bit beaut herself.

Over to you, Ms. Walsh.

Jess, tell us how you got into styling….

“I always wanted to work in fashion from a young age and, at 14, was lucky enough to get some work experience with a well known department store in their buying/marketing department. I did make the decision, though, to keep going with my studies and achieved a 2:1 in Fashion Promotion with Styling at UCL. I have literally taken every opportunity and run with it: one of my first sessions was for VERY, and I also started styling clients for events. I was then lucky enough to meet top stylist Gemma Sheppard, who was working with X Factor at the time. She became my mentor, and still is to this day. Gemma has been brilliant with advice and opportunities and has helped me build confidence and resilience in this competitive industry. Gemma also helped me with experience: I assisted her with a shoot for Ashley Roberts’ new shoe launch, and soon saw my name appear in glossy credits! Since then I have done such varied work, and even set up a River Island Style Studio in Liverpool, but I knew I wanted to go out on my own, so I launched Styled By JW last October.

We’ve read your CV! You have so much prestigious experience but do you have any particular highlights?

One of my first standout jobs was going on location with Megan McKenna to Dubai, for Miss Pap, who Megan had just created a range with. It was super glamorous and Megan was so professional and easy to work with. I do love working with top bloggers, too, and Dubai really is a creative hub right now for them. Even on their way to meet me, they are already styled to the max.

I really, really enjoyed styling at the NTAs as I got to work with Sir Tom Jones and his backing dancers - he’s a legend, and of course, part of The Voice on ITV1 so that was brilliant fun. I’ve worked with Kidz Bop for their You Tube Channel and I have to say, I have a hugely supportive family and they love seeing my name pop up in OK! Magazine. It’s actually a tough physical job and you have to be super-organised, from the original layouts to finally sending back every item of merchandising, it’s all down to the stylist! But the final looks are always, always worth it!”

Fashion is so fast paced now. How do you keep up with incoming trends but put your own stamp on them?

“My first port of call has always been vogue.com as it really is best for the latest designer shows, brands and collections. I also love WGSN that keeps me informed about up-and-coming colours and textures as well as related make-up and hair trends. Drapers Online also keeps me up-to-date about the professional side of the fashion industry. As well as my favourite glossies, of course, socials are invaluable for me to spy on inspiring fashion artists. I am lucky that I get invited to lots of brand events, and I also love festivals for spotting street styles. This Spring/Summer I have been doing a lot of tonal styling, which means dressing in different variations on the same shade from head-to-toe. Bleached denim is also huge right now. I am lucky that I work with really accessible brands, that most of your readers can get into, also.”

Who are your own style inspirations?

Olivia Culpo is a current favourite of mine - I know Fake Bake work with Olivia a lot, and she just has immaculate style doesn’t she? There are so many past and present figures - I am obsessed with fashion history as a subject, too! I met Chloe Sims recently and was so impressed with her - I haven’t styled her - yet! - but she knows a lot about fashion and isn’t afraid to take risks!”

How is the fashion world currently feeling about the tan?

“As we move towards summer, most of us do feel better with a tan, let’s face it! I work with so many celebrities and models who are literally obsessed with skincare, so of course, they are all faking it! The fashion industry loves a warm complexion, no matter what your base shade is, and we are all about the glow, too! I think clients like different looks now for different occasions, depending on what their overall image will be. This summer’s fashion colour palette is really varied: beige, oatmeal, Tutti Frutti shades, mimosa, citrus, sage green, dusky blue, the list is endless! But Living Coral is the shade of the season, and a beautiful, golden glow works really well with that.

For me personally, I like a classic look, so for that I go for Fake Bake Original as it is the first self tan I ever tried. I always go back to it - as it’s the best! For a lighter formulation, I adore Fake Bake Flawless Coconut Serum - plus, it smells delish! I’ve just styled the new Barry M Campaign and their shade range is so impressive - it’s all linked.”

What is your most coveted style item, that you don’t own yet?

A Cartier watch - I am putting it out there into the Universe……”

Finally, do you have any advice for would-be stylists reading this?

“Start as soon as you can, and get as much experience as you can - and if you get offered some intern experience, take it - when you begin, it is all about building up your contacts and learning what works. Study - art, photography, textiles, there are so many useful subjects as you really need to know about how fabrics, colours and shapes look, drape and photograph. Photography and digital tech are so important, as you’ll want to learn all of the tricks of the trade. Work, work and network. Retail experience helps you to get to know the customers and in your local area, approach noted names - and introduce yourself!  Networking isn’t just about who you meet it’s also about what you can offer - and hopefully, one day you won’t just be looking for a mentor, you’ll be a mentor yourself. And finally, you are your own brand. Stylists aren’t just BTS now - people want to get to know you. So start a blog, brush up on your socials skills and get to know other creatives, and get started. Then it’s all down to you, a dose of luck, and a whole lot of hard work.

I have the best job in the world. It’s not a 9-5 one, it is so varied but I get to work with fashion every day, and see the finished result either in print, on screen or online.

Cartier, here I come……”

FAKE BAKE talks Coachella 2019 Week 2: new beauty rules from the style queens of Cali…

So, Coachella is over but for so many of us who didn’t make it, our own summer festival journey is about to begin. But before we all dig out those tried-and-tested festi-glam looks, we are getting new kinda style feels from our Stateside sisters. Before Kaia Gerber rocked up at the first weekender, she posted this image on her Insta of her new campaign for YSL Beauty.

It simply gave us life. Listen, we’ll throw on glitter and stick our head in a bucket of flowers if we need to. No-one would dare to call Team Fake Bake, Team Fake Boring. But, this pic also kind of signalled that change was coming. Which sounds very hippy and very Woodstock, but there you go. How so? Well, it’s subtle, isn’t it? Now, we are not suggesting you just slap on a bit of eyeliner and go, unless that’s your thing, and if you want to rhinestone bra yourself to V Festival and back, then that’s your good. But we like a bit of a refreshing change, and it seems that it’s not just Kaia who is adopting a more pared-down look.

Ariana Grande

We are not suggesting the Queen of Coachella ‘19 would see this a natural look to walk to Aldi in, but we do love a Grande pony. Plus she’s wearing one hellavu headband, and they are definitely this season’s find.

Them VS ladies

They’ve been at it again girls, but this time we are loving the dialled-down style. Plus Jas brings Julia Roberts Pretty-Woman-At-The-Polo look to this century. Casually fabulous, and not a flower garland in sight.

Winnie Harlow

This is kind of casual, but Winnie is seriously not. Neon dress plus trainers. Don’t bother with pink hair accessories. No need to with pink hair, is there?

Olivia Culpo

Our amazing Tanya Pongrac Fake Bake tanned Olivia once more for Coachella this year, and what mighty fine results they achieve. We love this 1992 rave-in-the-desert look, too. Sporty. Cute. Flawless.
(We do love that we call that a Bum Bag here in Britain, though. Fanny Pack. Two words that just don’t roll in our world…)

Jilly Isabella

Lynne Kellow Beauty in Glasgow are responsible for this gorgeous Fake Bake glow. OK, so it’s not a subtle fashion look, but the accessories are really kept simple. We love the natural hair and fierce cowboy boots, also.

Hayley Baldwin

What is this all about? Being comfortable? When was being comfy outdoors a thing? Going pure retro, Hayley is the new face of Levi 501 jeans, and we have to say, they make a change from skinnies. Love ‘em.

So we caught up with one of our fave MUAs, Alison Grainger, who created this look for us, inspired by the Coachella stills we know she has avidly spied on for us. These are her words…

“Firstly, and this goes without saying, get your SPF on. My clients really look after their skin, so I am seeing less with sun damage now, as we are all becoming much skin wiser. If you want a tan, create your own with Fake Bake The Face Anti-Ageing Self Tan Lotion. I love the way Olivia Culpo wears her Fake Bake tan - she’s a class act!

You really have to practice your make-up when you are using self tan as it obviously alters your complexion. I love that Fake Bake are creating their own Masterclass around this theme - it’s much needed, as us MUA’s are perfectionists.

Here’s the look you want to create: not a care in the world, but super-groomed all at the same time. And if you are camping it up, you need to pack smartly and use products that multi-task. With this look, I’ve made the eyes the focus, and deep greens, blues and azures are so cute right now. My big tip is to create your own festi-kit, and pack it full of budget buys. There’s nothing worse than taking your best bits away, and worrying about losing them. I love super pigmented highlighters right now, and I think you can’t beat stick and pencil formulations if you don’t want to pack lots of brushes. Lip gloss is definitely back, and feels much more natural in summer than a matte lip. I’ve gone for minimal bronzer here and I try and keep brows really natural - I am really not a fan of overdone beauty. More and more of my clients want something natural now, too.

Finally, take your Fake Bake Flawless Survival Kit with you. If you are away for a few days, you can top up your Fake Bake tan if you need to, and it’s trio helps you prep, moisturise and tan. Then it’s time to make for the stages and forget about your lashes for a bit. If they stay on, or come off, well, isn’t that the sign of a Festival well done?”
We’re with Alison on that one. And there is still time to book in for our Fake Bake The Art Of The Spray Tan Masterclass with self tan supremo Emily Jacobs and top MUA Stacey Toner in Glasgow on 13th May 2019. It brings together how to create a flawless tan and then perfecting the most beautiful make-up to go along with it. Just in time for looking amazing this summer, it’s the best way to kick off your Festi season in super style.

So it’s time to leave behind the over-rhinestone’d look, perhaps. A new dawn awaits. It certainly seems like a long time since we checked out what Kate Moss and Sienna Miller were wearing for festivals. (As in not just seems like a long time…..it was a long time! Ah how we remember the mini dresses, the Hunters, the boho chic and the maxi-dress. What a time to be alive…)

Thank you to everyone in California for keeping us entertained and style informed for the last two weekends, but we’ll take it from here, thanks. Us Brits are still the best at knowing how to run the show, and you know, while we are all about the glam we also know how to cope in a mud landslide, your tent turning inside out, or your fanny pack pinging off during the set.

Sorry, we’ve brainwashed there for a bit. It’s a Bum Bag, people. A Bum Bag.

FAKE BAKE talks Coachella 2019 First Weekend and asks...what would Kaia Gerber do?

In the grand scheme of festivals, Coachella is still the baby on the block, but this weekend saw the Californian cultural destination of choice celebrating it’s 20th Anniversary. Back in the day, in 1999, it was all about Beck, the Chemical Brothers, and a free bottle of water on the way in. My, how things have changed.

Now Coachella is the start of our Festival Summer, and while it hasn’t got Glastonbury’s history, it has its own sense of glamour, which means we love it. Of course, it’s about the music, first and foremost and this weekend was no easy intro, as we were taken by surprise and waited in anticipation.

Selena Gomez, ultimate artist and the absolute Queen of Instagram, did not disappoint…

Blackpink made stage history and absolutely rocked our biker boots off…

Ariane Grande, what more can we say?

Like any great festival, though, Coachella is all about being seen, looking at who’s about, and of course, checking out what everyone is wearing. Plus, catching trends means we can get some tips for our own summers. Festivals, pool parties, holidays, going out-out, it never hurts to get an early start. So we thought we would pick out of our fave looks from the first weekend, and get a flavour of things to come for Spring/Summer 2019.

The VS girls at the Revolve party

So this isn’t exactly new style news, but it never hurts to be reminded of what works. Take great fashion forward pieces, and the VS girls have done so here by opting for an almost pretty approach, and then toughen it up with footwear and gone logo crazy with accessories. Dior clogs. Seriously, we are all in? Where can we get them?

Olivia Culpo

Our fave Stateside sister and Fake Bake fan nailed every trend in one look. Mustard. Check. Print playsuit. Check. Tan accessories. Check. Banging, major plait. Check. Toned, tanned pins. Absolutely.

Rachel and Anne Lynne McCord

OK, so this isn’t the subtle approach to festival dressing. This is the go-all-out point of view, and why not? Fringing, backpacks, 80’s hair accessories and legs for days. Come on, if you’ve got it, why not Coachella flaunt it?

Michelle Randolph

This U.S. actress got everyone on Team Fake Bake talking. Not everyone can get away with this look, and it’s really current, but surely Coachella is all about fun and not about taking style too seriously? Acid brights, cycling shorts, THAT Gucci bumbag and statement shades are all glammed up with a golden glow and seriously flowing locks. We heart this look.

Kaia Gerber

OK, so at just 17 Kaia wasn’t born when Coachella first started, but being the world’s youngest supermodel certainly gets you a VIP pass, does it not? We actually love Kaia’s understated approach to festi-glam, and when she wasn’t in double denim we loved this retro bucket hat and semi, cut-off, kick-flare jeans. Very 1999, but SO no last century.

Charlotte Dawson

In and amongst the crowd, we love spotting someone we know so Charlotte Dawson, in her own inimitable style, has shaken up California, and, quite literally, gone for it. Our favourite Northern style lass, who has her own brand of festi-chic she likes to call Chazella, has been rocking around West Hollywood, styling up her Freda Funk range and generally having a blast. Why go all that way to be boring? Having spent some time with our Chazza, boring is something she is chuffing not. Plus, she’s a real girl living her best life. Our type of woman, all day long.

Tash Oakley

Swimwear entrepreneur, Insta genius and all round genuine gal, Tash Oakley, looked, basically, how we would like to look if we were heading to Coachella. Proving you can never go wrong in neutral shades, tan accessories and lashings of gold, she definitely gives good hair and very, very good tan.

So we have looked at so many images are heads are spinning, and seen so much footage our earlobes ache, but we are already looking forward to next weekend. One thing we have noticed is that a Californian skin finish never goes out of style, so if you are feeling a little Coachella inspired and want to join in next weekend, what would we suggest?

If you want to go for the all out glam tan, then try our Fake Bake Double Shot Espresso Tan, with serious colour guiding, so that you can get that all-over super dark look.

If you want to go subtle, and try a buildable and quick-and-easy tan, pre-order our new Fake Bake Tanning Water, which goes on like a dream and we can guarantee won’t transfer onto your gorgeous, new season pieces.

We can’t guarantee we’ll get California sunsets over the coming Bank Holiday weekend, but the word ‘holiday’ should feel leave you feeling a little inspired and ready to embrace that Coachella spirit. So we are not flying in on a private jet, but we can definitely load up the live feed, get the girls around and go a bit mad with our barnets.

What would Stevie Nicks do? And if you don’t know who Stevie Nicks is, then why are you reading this post? Why?

FAKE BAKE talks life and style with our own in-house influencer, Roxanne Dragsnes…

Here at Team Fake Bake, we will take our fashion inspiration from everywhere, but when it comes to real life advice we all go to one person: Roxanne, our Social Media supremo. She’s just one of those people who has it. She makes off-duty a work of art, and we love her casual and contemporary approach to dressing. And, of course, she absolutely rocks a Fake Bake tan at all times. Roxanne also has very good hair, giving us major locks envy, and the type of nails that are lust worthy, too.

As well as being the brains behind our socials, Roxanne also works as part of our crack team who represent the Fake Bake brand at events, whether it be the NTA’s or one of own blogger/influencer occasions. Sounds fun? Well, it is, but it is also a tough gig at times, as while the celebs are on the red carpet, Roxanne is BTS, to make sure is everything is covered when it comes to Insta, Twitter and Facebook.
We caught up with Roxanne to find out more about her, her signature style and a bit more about what life is like being part of our family.
Over to you, Roxanne…..

I’m Roxanne and I’m the social media gal at Fake Bake! I absolutely love what I do as every day is different. Follow me on Instagram @roxanned_

We all love your style here at Team Fake Bake but who are your own inspirations?

I’ve always loved fashion and making something my own by adding tulle or embellishment. I studied International Fashion Branding at University and loved learning about all the different styles out there. I also completed a styling course in London where I got to work with a celebrity stylist which was amazing! My mum is super stylish and I have watched her put looks together over the years so I would have to say she is my fashion inspo.

I love the girls from TOWIE’s style and have watched the show since the beginning. Fake Bake Babe Billie Faiers has to be another style icon for me, I mean, did you see her wedding dress? GOALS!

I love stylist Mark Heyes. A lot of the clothes I buy come from his segments on Lorraine. I love his styling tips and how his looks suit everyone no matter their shape or size! He is a major inspo for me! The clothes featured are super-affordable and easy to access, too, which I think is really important.

Please, please give us some tips about how you put your looks together? What’s worth investing in? And what’s more budget friendly?

Gok Wan got me into adding embellishments to an outfit with his show Gok’s Fashion Fix. Even though I studied Fashion, I never made any clothes so I was obsessed with how Gok changed an outfit to make it look completely different and I learned how to do that from his show! I just start with a statement item, for example a Tulle Skirt, then work the look around that one item, like adding boots or chunky trainers and a faux leather jacket. I do that a lot with my outfits. I absolutely love the high street! Zara and Primark are my absolute faves as well as online boutiques. I always manage to find a bargain. When I have an event like a wedding or an awards show, I will tend to invest a bit more in that outfit but it will most likely be from ASOS so not mega expensive! ASOS is amazing!

Working in Social Media – every girl’s dream right?

YES! To be able to be on social media all day and interact with fans of Fake Bake and the lovely people we work with is amazing. I’ve made some great friends whilst working at Fake Bake like my girl Robyn Henderson (make sure you give her a follow) I go to a lot of events with her. We actually met at an event and just clicked and became best friends ever since! I remember my first day and Samantha Faiers liked one of our photos and Paddy McGuinness had messaged us and I was proper fangirling. Now I can say I’ve met nearly all of the lovely celebs and bloggers that I look up to, and while I get to meet recognised names, as a brand we really work in the background and with discretion, and I know trust is a huge part of why people work with us.
As for me, I mean, who would have thought two years ago I would be working for a Global brand and mingling with the stars? It’s great because I’m not sat at a computer all day every day and go out and about to photo shoots and events, and representing Fake Bake is a vital part of what I do as part of the team. I attended the National Television Awards in London and I have to say it was unreal and a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget! Even though it is incredible, it is hard work but Team Fake Bake are amazing. We all help each other out. Victoria (@VicFakeBake) is so lovely; I’m sure you all know who she is and I’m so lucky to call her my friend, as well as my boss, and I am so grateful to be working with such inspiring and successful women such as her and Sandra, who founded Fake Bake, so I’m super thankful to be where I am. What I post on social media is so important as self tanning is all about choice, therefore is it essential to include everyone in our posts. With social media getting such a negative view a lot of the time, I like to keep our posts positive, upbeat and bring fun to our pages.

You must have some Fake Bake favourites – tell us which ones you use to get you Insta Fabulous?

I absolutely love Fake Bake and have been a fan for years. I use Fake Bake Flawless Coconut Serum and I love love love it! That is what I wear in most of my Insta photos. We are all spray tan trained at Head Office so I’m lucky to get a spray tan now and again. When I get a spray tan I always go for Double Dark. I hate sitting in the sun and it is so bad for your skin so I always tan the safe way with a Fake Bake tan! This summer, I’ll be spreading the safe sun message, which Fake Bake pioneered. I am really proud to work for the brand and all that it stands for - really, the only way is up…..

We left our chat with Roxanne feeling inspired ourselves, and it’s so refreshing that as an influencer in her own right, she’s showing how to take accessible pieces and make them original, as there is nothing worse than turning up for an event and seeing the same look on repeat. And we are so lucky she is at hand, as we’ll definitely be bringing our new hauls in to talk about customising.

Getting Gok’d? We love a bit of Gok, but this S/S we’re all about getting Rox’d.

You with us?

FAKE BAKE talks Races Style with the one-and-only Philip Armstrong….

What are you wearing? Whether it’s in our work breaks or in our Whatsapp group, it’s the eternal question we keep on asking here at Team Fake Bake. So instead of just sending images back and forth we decided to aim a bit higher, and caught up with designer Philip Armstrong to get his take on all things Racing style. Originally from Liverpool, Philip and his partner Tony have created an established design house, which has just found a new home in Knutsford, Cheshire.

Beautiful Tanya Bardsley and her very own Phil!

Have the guys dressed anyone you know? Well, they started off after training and went for it, worked their way up and with a lot of effort, determination and a really strong idea of what the PA look should be, their designs have been seen on Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Kelly Rowland and Katy Perry to name but a few. And if you are scrolling through celeb feeds then you’re always going to see PA designs at events because they deliver. Darcey Bussell loves them, and so does Tess, and it takes a lot to outshine the Strictly dresses. This new season they have really stepped out of their comfort zone, and so we asked Philip and Tony to give us the lowdown…

Supermodel and BNTM host Abbey Clancy. Need we say more?

How did the whole Hollywood/A List thing happen?

It’s quite a unique story, really, as we never had to fight for our space. We are lucky that some influential stylists really loved our designs, and obviously their clients followed suit! We have quite a strong design aesthetic, so it came as no surprise that really strong women chose to wear PA, and return to us. In a multi-million dollar industry, it’s wonderful that such renowned names simply picked our dresses because they feel good and look gorgeous in them, and continue to do so.

This new space in Knutsford is beautiful - how’s your new home?

The way we buy fashion is changing, and of course even luxury labels do so much online now, but we wanted to do what suits our clients best, and that’s something far more personal, so we created an atelier space here in Cheshire. We have always been in the North West, even though our designs sell all over the world, but nothing beats meeting our clients face-to-face. We’ve been made so welcome, and we moved just in time for a busy season for us. There are never enough minutes, and we are both perfectionists.

What’s your Spring/Summer Collection all about?

We love that we have established something really special at PA, and we wanted to add a few twists. We’ve switched our colour palette up a lot, and we’ve added a lot of tailoring alongside our signature dresses. We have also got a few really standout pieces for those who want to go the extra style mile, too. We will never not do glamour, though. I mean, why would we?!

Races styling tips - please provide us with a few…..

When it comes to our own clients, we always want to make sure everything fits perfectly. You’d be surprised how much of a difference it makes! It’s really important to feel comfortable - without particularly looking it! We always advise clients to stay close to their own signature style - as you’ll want your look to work within your wardrobe. But you can be more adventurous with texture and colour. If you are on a High Street budget, your choice is fierce! We’ve collaborated with well known labels in the past, and they pay real attention to detail. We really love the tailored trouser suits around right now, as anything with a little structure always looks more expensive. And killer accessories count - you can really go bold there.

A little fashion shoot on the day of our visit (hats by @traceymillerdesigns)

We had to mention JLo and THE BRIDAL DRESS….

Let’s just say we’ve had lots of conversations about it! Our bridal business is really growing, and brides do really look for inspiration. Kate and Meghan still get talked about, but Jennifer is Hollywood royalty, isn’t she? There will definitely be a no- expense-spared budget, but we can’t wait to see who dresses her. She does go for Valentino when she wants old-school glam, and we’d love to see her in something really form fitting with a Princess-style train. Whatever she chooses, we know that brides all over the world will be watching and waiting. And the guests will be ones to watch, too - we are definitely hoping Michelle Obama makes an appearance, she would look fabulous in PA! As for Jennifer, of course, that would be the ultimate dress for us to design...

Advice for budding fashion designers. Hit us up with it!

When we started, we really did start from scratch. But we learned the trade and we simply never gave up. If you are going to chase trends, good luck to you, as you’ll usually end up behind them! All of the great designers we love have a real vision, and they have built their success upon it. Do any job in fashion you can to get an insight - while you are training do as much work experience as possible, and be prepared for doors closing sometimes. Never ever give up, and you are only ever as good as the way you make your clients feel. If you make them feel their very best, you’re winning….

What can we say. We had an amazing time with Philip and Tony and being in Knutsford, obvs, on a sunny afternoon, we did feel like we were right out of the Real Housewives, the glamour was that infectious. And we were lucky enough to try on some pieces, and we did get to gaze at that bridal looks. Heavenly. Whatever you choose to go to the Races, remember to try our new Fake Bake Tanning Water. Easy to apply, with no transfer, it’s the perfect product in the busy run up to the big day itself. Because, let’s face it, you want to get papped for for your perfect golden glow and immaculate style. You’ll know exactly where we are going with that one.

Knutsford, we had a blast. Sadly, we didn’t get a lift back in a Ferrari, but left with a few dress dreams and a whole lot of inspiration. And no we couldn’t pick just one, but we do have a couple of odds-on favourites.

Did you see what we did there?
