FAKE BAKE talks Normal People obsessing and pale skinned beauty hints for summer…

If you haven’t seen Normal People yet, go to the BBC iPlayer, binge-watch it, and then return to us. If you have seen it, well, then, you’ve seen it. We could be here all day talking about the love story between Marianne, the posh girl from the big house, and Connell, the quietly popular boy who also happens to be the son of Marianne’s family cleaner, Lorraine. Ah, Lorraine. Lorraine is the mum you want in your corner or the possible mum-in-law you want on your side. She is grand.

Taken from the award-winning novel by Sally Rooney, Normal People has smashed iPlayer records and broken our hearts. If you didn’t go to bits and cry at the end of episode three, then you don’t have a human bone in your body or indeed a soul. Why has it been such a huge hit? While it is about a relationship, it is quite simply, about all of our relationships. Everyone has felt like Marianne or Connell at some point. We have all felt on the outside, or that we didn’t fit in, or that someone else is better than at us.

Of course, we could be here all week talking about Connell, Connell’s chain and everything else about him that makes fans go nuts, but here at Team Fake Bake, we are fixing our gaze on Marianne. Played quite magnificently by the talented Daisy Edgar-Jones, she is the tall, elegant beauty with a mind of her own and a now legendary fringe. She’s already inspired miles of column inches from the fashion press and we do love the fact that she’s a bit different. Her wardrobe is being talked about in hushed tones: it’s 60’s, it’s 70’s, it’s 80’s, it’s 90’s. If you take your average Love Islander and think of the exact opposite, then Marianne is exactly that.

Here’s why we adore her…

#1 She says what she thinks a lot of the time

While Connell finds his way in the end, Marianne says exactly what she thinks from the start. She is a whip-smart, kick-ass young woman. Often what she is thinking is wildly inappropriate and that makes her even more powerful.

#2 She manages to say what she thinks whilst wearing that fringe

Come on, you know you’ve done it. You’ve piled your hair high and then pulled a bit around the front to see if you’d suit a full-on fringe. A few brave souls have chopped one in themselves. We are waiting for the hairdressers to be back on duty before we decide but even then, you can never be sure. If you are blessed with Marianne’s bone structure, then you’re in.

#3 She develops her style, and doesn’t conform

It takes a rare person to make a school uniform look chic. Marianne made the cut. She blossoms at Trinity College, and suddenly she is wafting about in ankle length satin skirts and cute blazers. Her accessories are luxurious and subtle but it’s her holiday wardrobe that kills us. You know when you are abroad and feel hot and bothered and your sundress is all wrinkled and your wedges are killing you? Not so, our Marianne. She manages to make a simple black dress and kicked-about pumps look full-on Audrey Hepburn, but with a contemporary twist.

#4 She proves that a smokey eye works for 24/7

Marianne’s make-up isn’t pristine or camera-ready. There are often a few smudges. But she has that absolute gift of looking like she’s just walked in from the most decadent all-night party, even when she hasn’t.

#5 She is absolutely and brilliantly real

If Marianne wasn’t at Trinity, in real life, she could be a supermodel, but she doesn’t give off VS Angel vibes. She’s every tall, super-slim mate you have ever had, who has no idea she is model material at all. Sometimes when we talk about body positivity we forget about our slender sisters, but Marianne lets us celebrate them.

We are not going to try and kid you that Marianne goes from pale beauty to bronzed goddess during a summer holiday. But she does get a bit of colour in her cheeks and we know from talking to you that when you go out into the sun, sometimes you just want a hint of something. Step forward, Fake Bake Fair Gradual Self-Tan.

Here at Team Fake Bake, a lot of us have fair skin and burn when we go near the sun, but Fair is our warm weather rescuer this summer. It packs less of a DHA punch than our other self-tans, so that you get a subtle glow. If you want to dial it up a little, then simply re-apply on prepped skin the following evening. Always remember to prepare your skin each time, and use one of oil-free moisturisers to maintain your newly softly tanned skin. Just add lots of dark eyeliner, for a little Marianne flourish.

Don’t forget, we haven’t forgotten we are nowhere back to normal yet so we are still running our Quarantan offers so that we can do our bit…

What to watch next? We are really loving Killing Eve Season 3, even though that’s about to end, and we are tuning in to The Real Housewives of Cheshire every week. We used to be jealous of the mansions and the handbags. Now we are near to tears watching them have coffee. In a restaurant. Because it reminds us of the good times of 2019 when we could walk out of our front doors and be free to roam, order a latte and go mad in the mascara aisle. If you are looking for something totally new, then Little Fires Everywhere on Amazon Prime is for you if you loved Big Little Lies.

Our thoughts are with you all. We hope it’s not long until we can sit in the sunshine together again, because we’ve realised that’s what being truly rich is all about. Villas in Italy are very nice though.

If you are re-watching Normal People, do remember the basic etiquette. Whatever you do, don’t view it with a single member of your own family.

Even if you have a mum exactly like Lorraine.

FAKE BAKE talks style, life and growing-up wisdom: it’s our fave Vicky Pattison…

One thing about the dawning of social media is that it has enabled us all to document our lives on screen. For most of us, we get to take the pics, add the words, edit and then post. Sometimes we look back and delete. Imagine what it is like having that whole process play out before everyone else? Back in the day, when Fake Bake got the call about sponsoring the first season of a new show, Geordie Shore, we went for it. Little did we know what it had in store for everyone involved.

Now, nearly a decade later, the show has made some of its cast huge stars. We have worked with many of them but there is one we can truly call a friend, and that’s the fabulous Vicky Pattison. In real life, she’s exactly who you would want in your corner: fun, open, candid and brilliantly funny. She’s also honest. Her life on screen has been quite a journey, and one we have all related to, and now as an accomplished young woman she’s grown up and become an accomplished TV star in her own right.

One thing that wasn’t really highlighted when Vicky’s career kicked off is that she is a Uni graduate: she has a degree in Drama from Liverpool John Moores University. Vicky actually only appeared on Geordie Shore for three years, and has used that as a springboard for everything she has achieved since.

We thought we’d tell you why we love her. Here’s our lowdown…

She’s brutally honest about body issues and confidence

Like lots of reality stars, Vicky launched her own fitness DVD in 2013 and we looked on as she literally shrank before our eyes. In recent years, though, Vicky has moved away from what the mirror says as being important. She takes a sensible approach to health and fitness and most importantly, is learning to be happy with who she is. And as we have met her so many times, we can report - she’s absolutely gorgeous!

She is open about mental health

We all have our down days. We have all been through break ups and difficult times. Imagine if the world was watching while all of that was happening? Vicky has talked about the challenges of growing up on screen and how it has taken time and work to get to a really settled place. Vicky has talked about suffering from anxiety and credits exercise and support from family and friends for helping her through it.

She is fearless in the face of trolls

We have all had the odd bitchy comment online. Imagine if the comments multiplied, and came from people who don’t know you? Vicky is a big fan of having digital detoxes, and moving away from replying to negative or hurtful comments. She’s really supported the #BeKind movement, and we applaud her for it.

She loves style, and it’s one we relate to

Put your hands up if you are impeccably put-together every day? Nope, we are not either. Vicky absolutely rocks it on the red carpet and at events, but behind the scenes, she’s just like us. And she doesn’t mind having her pic taken being a real girl, just like the rest of us.

She changed before our eyes on I’m A Celeb

We can’t believe it’s nearly five years since our Vicky became our fave Jungle Jane. She went into the camp known to younger audience members. She won everyone’s hearts, and showed that she’s fearless, gutsy and strong.

She put the heat into the Celebrity Masterchef kitchen

Vicky went right to the final and this time showed her more vulnerable side. After a difficult time in her life, Vicky put on her chef’s whites and set to work, and her confidence grew with each episode.Vicky started off as an absolute novice, and ended up a real winner. We cheered her on, as we knew how much it meant to her.

She’s keeping us going during lockdown

We have really enjoyed getting to know Vicky and her fabulous Ercan. They’ve been keeping our spirits up with their work together and our gorgeous lass has been making us howl with laughter: her chart-smashing podcast, The Secret To Surviving The Lows of Lockdown, is just what it says on the tin. We really loved her chats with Jamie and Sophie from Made In Chelsea - it’s about time our reality gangs mixed it up. Vicky has also been chatting to our Dancing On Ice fave Matt Evers - expect a riot!

She absolutely rocks a Fake Bake tan

Those early Geordie Shore days were all about full-on out-on-the-Toon glam, but in 2020 Vicky is all about a super-groomed look when she’s got something planned. And Ercan is her true partner-in-crime as he’s game for a go in our Fake Bake pro tan tents.

2020 has started off in a way none of us had predicted. Vicky started it with a new role on Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, which is a jewel in the crown when it comes to Saturday night telly. But we know as soon as the show returns, so will our Vicky.

And finally, in her own words, “Kindness is the mark we leave on the world…”

Here at Team Fake Bake we still like to think we are keeping your spirits up so don’t forget our Quarantan offers…

Our Fake Bake Mystery Bag is still available on our website - priced at just £20, it is packed full of £100 worth of goodies. Our aim here is to support independent therapists in the UK who are finding the current situation a real struggle.

There is still 30% off for NHS workers. Let’s help keep our key workers’ morale up…

Our Hand Sanitiser comes in a bumper sized bottle and for every donation we are able to distribute the products to those in the community who are finding themselves without a home.

The weather is warming up again so don’t forget to ramp up your SPF, and whether it comes to knowing where your place in the world is, it’s a bit of a confusing time. As a team, we just all hope you and all of your families are well and safe, and that it’s not too long until we are enjoying some better moments with our loved ones, in the sun.

With good hair, at a table in the open air, wearing something that doesn’t have an elasticated waistband.

Talking of hair, has anyone cut their own yet? We are all lusting after fringes. Unfortunately, none of them have turned out quite as planned...

FAKE BAKE talks perfect glow up tips with James Harknett and ELLE….

Staying on a positive note, one of the great things to come out of this strange time in our lives is that we have had a little access to more of our fave experts. Whether it is cookery or ballet, and every other skill or hobby known to the human race, if you want to know more about it, you don’t have to travel far to find it. Our Global Creative Consultant, James Harknett, has been super-busy in a different way and last week took part in a nightly prestigious campaign with ELLE magazine, live on their Instagram account.

We are so proud of our James. He has been in the industry for twenty years this year, and after giving everyone who joined a brief bio, he was off flying with this fantastic self-tanning at home tips. We had a Zoom chat with James straight after to run through them one more time so you all get access to premium level advice. We thought we knew all there was to know. James, however, made sure we completed our set of skills.

James Tip #1: perfectly golden limbs and hands

“I really like having a wardrobe of self tanning products at hand, and I do love multi-taskers and luckily, through my role with Fake Bake, I get to try the very best! Everyone asks me about prepping and one thing I do now is to actually exfoliate the day before self tanning, which is quite a change from the usual advice. On the day itself, I always make sure I am armed with a simple, oil-free moisturiser.

My favourite formulations have a tanning guide and I’m so thrilled we have just had a new bumper delivery of Fake Bake Flawless Self-Tan Liquid. Flawless started the whole family with the same name - Flawless Darker is also back in, everyone! The whole range has won so many awards it is hard to keep track of them!

Millions of bottles of Flawless have sold around the world, and it’s my personal favourite! It is easy to spritz on. I make sure any areas which are naturally dry have a barrier of oil free moisturiser - this gives you a seamless finish around elbows and ankles.

When it comes to hands at the moment I have a slightly different approach. We are washing them more, and so it’s easier for tan to fade faster and skin to become really dry. So I am doing my ‘hands tan’ more often than the rest of my body. I apply a really sparing level of oil free moisturiser, and then get to work with my Flawless.

One of my favourite make-up artists showed me her favourite trick: she applies self tan on her hands with a larger blending or kabuki brush using strokes from wrist to fingertips. It’s amazing, you get brilliant coverage and no build tell-tale build up. It’s quite a subtle finish but it means you can apply it regularly. And a little product goes a long way!

James Tip #2 glow up your face with a natural finish

As I work with photographers so much, I get to realise what really works on camera, and what looks much better in real life. I love working with MUA Freyja Barker who knows how to get it right: she loves a natural, glowy look. Facial tanning is one area for me where tans with a colour guide are spot on. New, clear formulas are brilliant and easy to use and have their own place, but for the face, I want to see what and where I am applying my tan. Of course, Fake Bake already have their own facial tanner, but when I am in a hurry I adore using Fake Bake Double Shot  Espresso Tan, which has a super-light formula.

I take two drops of Espresso and mix it with my favourite facial moisturiser - make sure you are using a lightweight one, and not a heavy, oily formula. Then take your blending or kabuki brush and literally buff it into your skin. This is the best method of application I have tried - it means you get a realistic finish around your hairline, which often used to be a bit of a giveaway. Finally, you can add another layer of coverage under cheekbones, on the bridge of your nose and on your temples. It’s a natural way to tan-tour, without having to rely on heavy make-up! This is also so cost-effective and quick. Espresso has a serum formulation so is perfect for combining with your moisturiser.

James Tip #3 making it last

I know this is not novel news, but especially as we get towards warmer weather, jump in the bath before you plan your tan. And if you have any remaining tan from last time, use a cloth you’d get with your favourite cleanser and gently tackle stubborn areas. Once you’ve applied your tan, please try and stick to showers. Anything that dehydrates the skin shortens the life of your tan. One thing that has emerged over the last few years is our obsession with skincare as well as self tanning.

If you use hot water and harsh cleansers and skincare every day, then that facial tan is going to have a much shorter life. In terms of cleansing, use a really gentle facial cleanser that you remove with a warm, soft cloth and don’t scrub. This kind method is effective for both your skin and your glow.

A lot of you ask me about skincare and there is so much choice and it gets so confusing, doesn’t it? I would definitely steer away from active ingredients on a night when you apply your facial self tan, as it makes it easier for the tan to work and also gives your skin a break.

My final advice, as always, is never forget your SPF. I know now so many of us are at home we have more time to sit out if we have access to outdoor space. Of course, sun has a feel-good factor and is important for Vitamin D, but burning is so bad for the skin and once you have perfected the art of a gorgeous Fake Bake glow up, it’s the only way to get golden.

Thanks to all of the team at ELLE UK, it was lovely chatting tanning tips with you guys. I just hope it’s not too long until I am tanning you in person….”

Here at Team Fake Bake, like you all, we are adapting to all of the new advice and guidelines and please rest assured we are being really mindful. And we still like to think we are doing our bit…

Our Hand Sanitiser comes in a bumper sized bottle and for every donation we are able to distribute sanitiser to those in the community who are finding themselves without a home.
We can’t wait for our new subscriber issue of ELLE to arrive. A magazine that was first published here in 1985, with supermodel Yasmin Le Bon on the cover, this year is celebrating a first by having no image on the cover, but the names of 228 frontline workers. One thing is for sure: we produce products, ELLE write the words, but it is you who are really the true stars.

We’re giving up asking about hair welfare. There’s not a DIY trick left in our arsenals. If you see us in a supermarket queue in gym leggings and oversized beach hat, you’ll know it’s us.

We are now feeling more than a team. It’s more of an army, really, isn’t it?

FAKE BAKE talks being a First Time Mummy with Glasglow Girls Club’s Laura Maginess…

One group of us we know are really going through a very different time right now are First Time Mummies. We all went into lockdown watching some of our fave mummies on screen. Sam and Billie Faiers have made such a huge success of their ITVBe show The Mummy Diaries on ITVBe. Whilst both the girls live a fabulous lifestyle, so many of you have talked to us in our conversations about how much you relate to the show. No matter who you are, all new mums experience so much common ground with young children: from the tantrums to the joys, we love seeing it on screen. Oh, and we are all nuts about Nelly. She’s definitely one of the stars of the show...

We loved hanging out with Sam and Billie at the NTA’s with Ferne - pictured here with our gorge friend Jess Wright..

And we are all enjoying the new season of First Time Mum on ITVBe starring Ferne McCann and her equally gorgeous daughter, Sunday. As a new mum with a young child and a career to work on, Ferne’s humour and honesty make it a great watch. We know from talking to our team, family, friends and colleagues that being a first time mum is a particularly challenging time now. So we thought we’d catch up with the amazing Laura Maginess of Glasglow Girls Club, whose little girl is just about to celebrate being 16 weeks old. As an entrepreneur building a business, as well as looking after Bella-Rose first and foremost, we thought she’d be the best person to chat to. During a week when new mums like Carrie Symonds and mums-to-be like Gigi Hadid are in the news, we are right on topic.

We are super-proud of our gorge friend Lydia and her beautiful new daughter, Loretta.

Here’s what Laura told us when we sat down for a Zoom chat...

Laura, what’s it like being a first time mum during lockdown?

I would say it’s hard and magical in equal measure.  The hard part being the lack of physical contact with family members.  Lockdown officially began when Bella-Rose was 9 weeks and now over 15 weeks she has changed and developed so much in that time.  We keep up with the grannies and papas and aunties and uncles everyday on FaceTime/ Zoom and WhatsApp calls, but nothing beats getting a cuddle and interacting in person.

The magical part for my husband and I is the focused bonding time.  Lee would be out working full time if we were not in lockdown and so he would be missing all the daytime interactions when Bella-Rose is at her most energetic. With the weather being so lovely too, we have been out in the garden loads, in the paddling pool and tent and Bella is getting to experience so many new things in the fresh air which I think is so important when we are in lockdown. Our 1 hour walks a day are a highlight too, as she gets to marvel at the trees and nature and get that wee imagination going!

Do you have any advice for expectant mums on how to keep their spirits up?

Online classes are a must for new mums!  Bella-Rose and I do Tots Play with Clare Kerr which incorporates sensory, sign language, baby massage and music and we do Zumbini with Libby Smith, which is a mixture of music, dance and sensory (incorporating music from around the globe and different languages, which is truly amazing - Bella-Rose will prob know Spanish before me!!). Classes are an amazing way to bond and encourage development with your baby. Out of lockdown they are a great way to meet new mums too and from the classes I am in WhatsApp groups with other mums where we can ask each other advice, which is really lovely.  Online classes also give you ideas for things to do with your baby when not doing a class like creating sensory toys!

Also joining Facebook groups like the Glasglow Girls Club is great as there are 20K women in there with whom you can ask anything!  Parenting tips and ideas are a regular feature. What’s more, they offer that feeling of community, which we are all missing at the moment!

We love collaborating with Glasglow Girls Club - how are you staying connected and are you excited about future plans?

Aw thank you, we LOVE partnering with Fake Bake too! As I am still on maternity my mind is whizzing with ideas to launch later in the year, but at the moment I am staying connected with members via the Facebook groups, GGC quiz nights and online classes that are being run for members but the team. Also excitingly, to keep the positivity glowing and flowing I have partnered with Fake Bake to launch The Glow Show, which incorporates both a positivity movement across insta (search #theglowshow for a wee nosey) and also a chat show running with your very own Victoria Halliday.  More details on this will be announced shortly @glasglowgirlsclub!!!

Something I am most definitely excited about is the events starting up again.  The GGC run a fabulous bi-monthly brunch with the Radisson RED (Fake Bake were one of our first sponsors) and just before lockdown kicked in we were set to launch The Supper Club at the Corinthian in partnership with Fake Bake.  At this we had This Morning presenter Josie Gibson, Dancing on Ice winner Alex Murphy, Entertainer and comic Christine Sparks and Fake Bake Boss Babe Sandra Vaughan booked to talk success during a slap up three course meal!!  Cannot wait to relaunch that event!!

How are you managing with your beauty routine - do you ever have time for a quick Fake Bake tan?

Yes always! I love make-up free days but having a wee Fake Bake glow, makes me feel more confident without my slap.  I am really naturally pale which, I think, makes me look tired and this in turns makes me feel tired. I honestly feel like glowing up with Fake Bake puts a spring in my step!! When I was pregnant I tended to rely on wash-off tans, and now I’m really enjoying some of the latest self tan additions to the Fake Bake range. As I am quite pale I love Fake Bake Fair Gradual Self Tan Lotion.

I also love Fake Bake Tanning Water as it is so quick and easy to apply with its mousse formula. When I am in a hurry it is a godsend.

When I have a little bit of time, which isn’t often, I really like to have a little Fake Bake pamper time to make sure my Fake Bake tanning products do their best work. Fake Bake Coconut Body Polish is fabulous to use during these warmer months to keep your skin smooth and prepped.

I also use Fake Bake Oil Free Mistifier all the time, and not just after tanning, as it keeps skin really hydrated without and stickiness, and is so easy to spritz on after a shower!

The GGC membership now incorporates online fitness classes and activities, a Book Club and exclusive online events to help keep our members entertained and inspired during lockdown. Our business community incorporates regular training vids and Q&As with business experts as well as a weekly virtual coffee and networking opportunity for members to keep all connected.  Find out more about becoming a member here www.glasglowgirlsclub.com

We absolutely loved catching up with Laura and can’t wait to attend amazing GGC events with Laura and her team again...

For anyone who is pregnant and expecting their first child at this time we have loved catching Dr. Sarah Jarvis and her segments on The Jeremy Vine Show. We think she’s so factual and brilliant so if you want to catch her valued opinion got to:

We are still doing our bit as best we can here at Team Fake Bake to keep everyone’s beauty spirits up during this time.

Our Hand Sanitiser comes in a bumper sized bottle and we are distributing Sanitiser to those in the community who are finding themselves without a home at this time from the proceeds of the sales.

For all of you expectant mums, first time mums and experienced mums we also wanted to give a shout-out to this amazing book by one of our fave mums, Giovanna Fletcher. Heartwarming and enthralling, it’s the perfect read for right now.

We are sending you all our love and want you all to stay safe and well.

Oh, and by the way, how is your hair?
