FAKE BAKE talks faux freckles, super-heat self-tanning and staying staycation sane…

What’s new this week? Seriously, where do we start? Are we watching our calories (whose idea was that, seriously?!) In quarantine after a holiday, on a local lockdown, in work, at home, the list is quite simply endless. Again, we are not making light of it, but we are here to provide a little oasis from the outside deluge of news, news and more news. As this is being typed, Team Fake Bake are literally baking. Indoors baking, but you catch our drift. Can we moan about the weather, a bit? Again, what’s going on? It’s zero to baking in a heartbeat, and then back again.Well, we know August has some warmer weather on its way, and we take it that any holidays are now going to be within these sunny isles. Our Global Creative Consultant James Harknett said this is the way forward, involving two great hacks.

The first is to use our Fake Bake 60 Minutes Self Tan Liquid. It goes on seamlessly and you can leave it on for an hour for a quick, subtle finish. You can leave it on for up to three hours for a more defined glow up. On humid nights you want to make your routine as quick and simple as possible.

James’ second hack is for when you’ve applied your tan, it’s getting hotter as the night goes on, and you don’t want it to go patchy as you sleep. The tip? Use one of your medium sized make-up brushes to hand, add a little talcum powder and dust it inside your elbows and lightly under your arms. This means the product won’t trap there if it really is a scorcher outside, and you wake up with exactly what you had planned: a perfect tan!

James has also been busy in the press this week, and seriously, when isn’t he? The go-to guy for when glossies want a true expert, this time around James has been talking about that trend we have been seeing all over Tik Tok. Yep, freckles. Now, of course, you can achieve them with make-up, which then washes away, but if you want freckles in the heat with a bit more staying power, then, James has got the goods, as told to Grazia...

‘The key to making this look really natural is to use the right brush,’ advises James, ‘I use a high-quality stippling brush, which I’ve been using loads recently. It’s crucial to use a fake tanning formula with a tinted guide colour. Simply spray one pump of tan - I love Fake Bake Flawless Self-Tan Liquid - onto a plate and then dip the top of the brush into the solution, so it evenly soaks into the tips of the brush. Next, press the brush lightly over the bridge of the nose and cheeks for the desired freckle effect and leave it to set for a good 2/3 hours. Finally, gently cleanse and there’s a faint, natural-looking freckle effect left in place.’ Well we know what we’re trying this weekend…

OK, now we are getting serious. We know that you lot love a glow. We also know you want gorgeous skin. And when you are scrolling through the by-the-pool Gram tans, they are pretty dark, right? Whoever is wearing the tan also has magically flawless skin. We are going to go in here. If you sit by the pool for long enough, you are probably going to go red, burn, and really irritate your skin. Even over just a few days, you are causing damage that lasts a lifetime. And that’s before we even mention the risk of skin cancer, which is the most common form of cancer in the UK, and is on the rise annually.

We are so glad that skin freaks everywhere are talking sunblock. Well done to the powerhouse that is Rihanna for releasing a broad-spectrum SPF 30 this week, and to every journo and blogger who has been getting the message across giving us the tea on keeping our complexions looking fabulous, forever. And the British Beauty Council’s Insta has been flames (pardon the pun!) this week on the subject...

Don’t forget it’s not just your face! You should apply SPF as your last skincare ‘layer’ on your face every day (even in winter!) but don’t forget the rest of you. Make sure it covers UVA AND UVB rays and because of the lockdown situation there are lots of sunscreen deals about. Stock up and slather on. And no-one will know where your Flawless tan comes from, unless you tell them…

Finally, how do you stay staycation sane?

Switch off when you can. Get out of Whatsapp chats, don’t read your emails and just get out in the fresh air when you can. We know it’s an odd time (you can go to the pub, but not to a theatre, and we could go on) but as long as you are staying safe you can always find somewhere locally that’s on your list of must-sees. (Hands up who lives near to loads of places of interest that they have never actually been to!)

Spend time with family members who you can now see. Holidays used to mean Ibiza, not trips to see your nan, but hey ho, go with the 2020 flow. If safety allows, go and catch some quality time with anyone in your family or circle who can feel isolated at the best of times. Yes, we know it’s not a champagne spray party - unless your nan is up for one. Whoever you choose to call on, the feel good factor you’ll get beats any cocktail hands down. Plus, you can still wear a great hat.

Read. No, not emails. No, not comments on socials. A book. Right now we are loving:

Women Don’t Owe You Pretty by Florence Given - modern feminism for the Insta generation…

Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton - the ultimate advice from the queen of life tips.

How Do We Know We’re Doing It Right? By Pandora Sykes - essays by Dolly’s podcast twin about everything from technology to romantic errors.

How To Fail by Elizabeth Day - actually, we learned from this that making mistakes really is OK. Good news, that.

Behold The Dreamers by Imbolu Mbue - a brilliant novel about a young couple struggling to live the American dream.

Hey, it’s OK to get the ice cream out, and make every day Dress Up Friday so you can cram in your summer wardrobe while you still have time. There are some absolute bargs, around, too, so if you have the budget you can pre-plan a few buys for next year, too.

Ah, next year. 2021. What will that be like? One thing we have learned in 2020 is that planning for the future is fine, but sometimes you really have to roll with the punches, and this year has served a few knockouts.

We hope you are all safe and well. We also hope you get some time off over the next few weeks, even if it’s just a few days, to get some R&R. As most of us have worked out, working from home actually still involves, er, working.

Have a great week, and DON’T FORGET YOUR SUNSCREEN. You’ll thank us one day, we promise.

So fake the glow, don’t fake the style and literally get your fave dress and your best garden pose on. If it’s good enough for Jodie Comer at the TV BAFTAs…
