This year marks 100
years since women here got the vote, but did you know it’s almost a century
since the suntan first became fashionable? Before that, think Downton Abbey
pale for the 1920’s girl. Then along came someone who changed all of that. She
swapped traditional dresses for knitted tops and wide leg trousers, and came
back from a holiday sporting a tan so unusual that everyone wanted to steal her
look. Her name? Coco Chanel.
Since then, the tan has
had an enduring connection with summer looks, in particular. Back in the day,
though, we had no idea how damaging to our skin a dark tan is. And how ageing.
One minute you are a Love Island lovely. But keep up with the all day
tanning, and one day you wake up and you're Madge from Benidorm. Who we adore,
by the way.
In some areas of high
fashion, pale is absolutely the standard. But for many of us, having a glow,
especially in summer, really makes you feel good, and makes your summer wardrobe
just look more fabulous. Sometimes when you put on that new dress or shorts,
you just want to look down and swap pale pins for tanned ones. And high fashion
still loves the tan. Gisele is rarely seen without one, and we are
loving this new cover of U.S. Elle featuring Ariane Grande.
Simply stunning. And these girls are skin savvy. Their cover looks are their
day jobs, and so they are all about enhancing their skin rather than basting it
in the sun, coated in oil.
And you don’t have to
think about lying in the sun for hours to get that couture look. Sometimes less
is more, and a hint of a golden tan just screams class. Note to self. Check out
Kaia Gerber at the recent Valentino Couture, which is just sublime to
us.
So, now for the bit
where Team Fake Bake get a little bit, er, preachy. It is over a decade
since our fave Boss Babe, Sandra Vaughan, petitioned Parliament over her
fears concerning sunbeds, which are so over now, they're not even retro. We
know you are far more educated now, too, and so we won’t fill this post with
facts and figures, but the reality is,
is that skin cancer is still a major concern. Not only that, over exposure to
the sun is really ageing for the future, and in the moment, is not a good look.
Remember Kim K. We repeat, remember Kim K.
We’re still on a Save
Your Skin mission, so that you go on holiday, at home or anywhere else, and
look after your beautiful skin. And we are not against the sun. A little bit
does you good. It’s not just the feel good factor, but an important way to
boost Vitamin D. It also lifts your mood. So what can you do to make sure you
stay safe in the sun, and still come home looking amazing. The answer? You
gotta mix it up, people….
Before You Go,
Amplify Yourself
The bit before you go
away is just as important as being away. Treat your skin with a little TLC
before you go, and it will repay you in kindness. Exfoliate and moisturise
regularly. We love using Fake Bake Amplify for a week before a trip, as
it helps boost melanin production in your skin. That’s a bonus. Plus it smooths
imperfections and is just a great foundation for what’s to come.
The Night Before,
Tan Time
We think a holiday is
the perfect time to get a professional Fake Bake tan. You just can’t
beat it. You get to chose the formula that suits you, and your specially
trained therapist will be able to get to the bits we all struggle with.
Sorted.
While You’re There,
Fake It, Don’t Bake It!
Do not burn. We repeat,
do not burn. This is the worst thing for your skin, ever. It means a lot of
damage has been done already, plus it’s really painful and looks awful. Lobster
skin is not the way forward.
Be careful out there.
Don’t sit out in the sun for hours, and avoid altogether in the middle of the
day. Go off, and have a nice lunch and relax. You’re on holiday. You deserve
it. And you know those huge straw hats you keep seeing? Get one.
Be armed and fabulous.
Always go for a high SPF, which has UVA and UVB coverage. Every brand,
even the budget ones, tend to have both now and for that, we salute them. Don’t
apply once in the morning and leave it there. Sand, sea water and swimming
pools love removing your SPF. Spray parties, the same! Re-apply on the regular.
Take your time. You
know that bit when you see people by the pool binge-tanning and trying to get a
s dark as possible, as soon as they can? Don’t bother. Pamper yourself. Apply
our Fake Bake 5 Minute Mousse when you get out of the shower. Put on
whatever you love, because it won’t transfer. It gives you an instant glow and
keeps working while you are playing. By the time you are out your tan will be
developing, without that old school self tan smell. There is a reason this wins
awards, and it’s our holiday must-have.
There you have it. It’s
your choice, but as you are already Fake Bake fanatics we know we’ve got you on board. There is nothing worse than waking up after your first night away
with fried skin and a hangover. We are all about having a good time, but you
can do that whilst enjoying that holiday sun and keeping your skin in check.
The only time you every
want to covet leather skin and Chanel is in a 2.55, is it not? Thank you Coco.
We are forever in your debt.
