Imagine going for a job you know you’d be great at and
having the door slammed in your face? Imagine having that happen over and over
to you, and you keep trying. It’s hard to believe that’s how Gisele Bundchen started her modelling career, but back in the days when
models were supermodels were superwaifs, and the look was more grunge than glam,
the fashion world didn’t really have much room for someone quite like
Gisele.
Like everything in fashion, times and moments change. As
we headed towards a new century, people were feeling more hopeful, and bored of
streamlined beige. Gisele first really came to life when she photographed for the
cover of British Vogue
in the summer of 1998. Suddenly the girl
with the honey hair and sunny skin was much in demand. Every photographer on the
planet wanted to put her in front of the camera, and her work with Mario Testino is
still legendary.
What happens when there’s a perfect cultural storm?
Jennifer
Lopez had arrived: things were getting
curvy. Suddenly labels wanted to be colourful, out and proud. The party
atmosphere in places like Rio was infectious. Not everyone could buy into bling,
but we could all join the party, especially when it came to it actually being
1999. From Dolce &
Gabanna to Gucci to Louis Vuitton, everyone
wanted luxury written all over them.
Labels were everywhere. If it didn’t have a logo, it
simply didn’t fly. Hair got bigger and tans got deeper. Head-to-toe showing off
became the norm and there was really only one model who was top of this new,
almost over-the to approach: Gisele. Here at Team Fake Bake, we
love talking about beauty in all its forms, and nearly two decades later what
‘beauty’ is defined as now simply includes us all. Social media and blogging
have made us all superstars in this more democratic world.
Gisele built
a career on her striking looks, but we had no idea at the time that although she
looked gorgeously healthy, she actually wasn’t inside. She has talked much of
not living healthily at all at the time, and suffering from chronic anxiety.
Luckily, since then she has opened up about her life, and shown us that you can
be the highest paid model in the world, but everyone is ordinary on the
inside.
She has given us some of fashion’s finest moments, from
being a VS Angel to walking at the closing ceremony for the Rio Olympics. She is
still hugely in demand and remains one of the world’s highest paid models. Now
married to Tom
Brady, and
a happy and very natural mum, she still turns up in a campaign from time to time
and takes our collective breath away.
And
the tan? Well, whatever happens in fashion land, she loves a golden glow but you
don’t get skin like Gisele’s at nearly 40 by sitting in the sun all day long.
Gisele often talks about her now very healthy lifestyle. If she goes out in the
sun, it’s before 8 am. It’s sunscreen for her, and the kids.
When Gisele first arrived on the scene, the super tan was in, but
self-tans were really only just taking off. The industry itself sparked into
action. If people wanted a gorgeous tan and skin at the same time, endless
sunbathing was out. Fake
Bake arrived soon after, and since then
we’ve gone from our one superstar Original to
a whole wardrobe of tanning products.
A deeply bronzed tan, just like Gisele’s, always has its place and ours is back in the shape of
Fake Bake Flawless
Darker. Part of our million-selling,
award-winning Flawless family,
it is packed with extra tanning ingredients so that you get a super-intense
glow. It’s spritz-on formula is so easy to apply, and the end result is for you
if you are a practised tanner and/or have medium to darker skin
tones.
Listen, none of us are going to Rio any
time soon. For this summer, it might be a case of taking the party spirit to
Rhyl. When and if we are allowed to, of course. But think of it this way. There
will be less people showing off their poolside looks in Ibiza and more of us
celebrating by meeting more than one friend, and maybe one day soon, that could
even be in a beer garden. Summer 2020 is not about luxury labels, but the luxury
of being around each other.
Sometimes
you gotta dial down the glamour, but you can still dial up your tan.
Just ask yourself: what would Gisele do?
