FAKE BAKE talks Cannes style, and Riviera tanning with James Harknett….

Unless you have been hiding under a style rock, you could not have avoided all the looks from the Cannes Film Festival over the last week. The Festival itself is looking fabulous, as it is now 73 years old, and over the years has become the most glamorous film multi-award event on the planet. Yes, the Oscars and BAFTAS are amazing, but really, you can’t arrive on a speedboat, can you?

Everyone who is anyone has swanned around the South of France in search of the Palme d’Or. It was the legendary Brigitte Bardot who really made Cannes the centre of chic, when she first started appearing on screen.

Elizabeth Taylor was always known for her ultra-glam look, and was a CFF regular.

Since those golden days, Cannes has been the place for more off-the-wall film choices, more international audiences, and attracts every mover and shaker in the film industry. However, women, who have often been seen as more of a show piece than a real star, have been moving the festival forward, which is good news to us. And we know that us girls in general are having a more of a say in the film industry in general. Just ask Rebel Wilson, who has recently both produced and starred in The Hustle.

However, it doesn’t mean we can’t be powerfully stylish, too, so we checked out our favourite Cannes looks. Red carpets - you have to dress up, don’t you?

We caught up with our Global Creative Director James Harknett over the weekend, who has recently worked with award-winning actress, the amazing Julia Stiles. Julia is about to star in Season 2 of Riviera, on Sky Atlantic. We are obsessed after the first season. What started off as a murder mystery has turned into a twisted family tale that is literally dressed up in luxury. The wardrobe is literally to die for. And Julia, as Georgina Clios, is a lesson in pure understatement, and a  2019 version of Grace Kelly. We adore her. This new season also stars Poppy Delevingne and Jack Fox. That’s our TV glam fix sorted...

So we asked James how to get Julia’s look. This is what he told us…

Julia is such an understated and elegant lady, I wanted to do something in keeping with her look both on and off screen, which has a touch of glamour but is really modern and contemporary, that would take her as easily to the Cote d’Azur as it would to the BAFTA red carpet, where she recently presented an award.

I have to say, for big occasions, I would opt for a professional tan if you can. I have already talked on the Blog about my two decades in the business, and still, the Fake Bake Original professional formula is still pretty unbeatable to me. Of course, there are so many formulations and innovations within the Fake Bake family now, but there is a reason why Original remains: it is so long lasting, and that colour guide and formula still works beautifully on so many skin tones. Having a professional tan simply takes the work out of self tanning for you, and for so many of the looks on show at Cannes, as well as with some of the beautiful couture designs Julia wears on Riviera, you want the standard of your tan to match the design level of your outfit.

If you want to do your own, I recommend our Fake Bake Coconut Serum. With so many spritz-on formulas now we are spoiled for choice when we are a little time poor, and spritz-ons are wonderful in so many ways, but using Coconut Serum is worth the effort when you want really long-lasting results that leaves your skin glowing and moisturised. My golden rules for either a pro tan or one at home still apply - you still need to exfoliate beforehand with a non-oily formula, and maintain your Fake Bake tan afterwards with an oil-free moisturiser. This is what Fake Bake does so well - the whole Prep & Maintain range is designed to be used in conjunction with every self tan, and just as must care goes into these formulations also.

It’s been an honour to work with Julia. I mean, what can I say? She’s a tremendous actress and she just has it, that sprinkle of something that makes someone a true Hollywood star.

I’d love to work with her again - Cannes sounds lovely, if she happens to be there……”

Our James is super busy as always, even in this last week he has been featured in The Telegraph and we were so impressed that his work based at the prestigious W Hotel, in London, has been listed by Vanity Fair in their Beauty Treatments To Try This Spring, but we wouldn’t expect anything less.

And as for the rest of the of us, we may not have a couture budget but we have already been eyeing up the best beauty looks at Cannes, too, and these are our two faves.

Selena Gomez does that classic red lip and keeps it French in Louis Vuitton...

Priyanka Chopra does glorious gorgeous skin and the best eye look of the week...

We recently ran our latest Art Of The Spray Tan Masterclass with make-up supremo Stacey Toner, and she’s going to be on the Blog next time with her own tips on how to do a red carpet look on freshly-self tanned skin. So, we definitely need to know more, as there is a real lesson in how to get it right.

Until then, we will be watching Riviera this Thursday, and wishing we were swanning along the Corniche D’Or (yup the even have a golden road!) in a vintage Mercedes and something by Chanel. As for getting away with murder, we’ll have to wait and see.

We’re good people here at Team Fake Bake. We don’t want to push anyone off a yacht. But we wouldn’t mind an invitation on board...
